: who is gert danielsen?

born in bergen, norway, in 1977, gert danielsen soon discovered that his world was much more than the confines of the beautiful coastal town.

having been actively involved in pupils' councils and student politics in his primary and secondary education, he won a norwegian scholarship to attend the united world college in new mexico, usa, where he completed his bilingual ib diploma in 1996.

in 1996-97, he volunteered with the norwegian ngo latin-amerikagruppene, accompanying returned refugees in an indigenous village in guatemala, before commencing his first degree in international relations and spanish at the university of st andrews. during his year abroad, he did volunteer work as the coordinator of the conflict transformation programme at the catholic organisation codecal in bogotá, colombia.

after graduating from st andrews in 2002, gert got a job with the centre for peacebuilding and conflict management (ccm norway) and the norwegian peace corps (fredskorpset) as a junior lecturer in peace studies and international relations at the university of north west in south africa. he later worked as an associate at ccm, coordinating a peacebuilding project with iraqis living in norway and gaining state funding for two projects.

in march 2004 he left for universidad del salvador in buenos aires, argentina, to embark upon his rotary world peace fellowship in a masters programme in international relations, peace and conflict resolution. while there, he also studied mediation, nonviolent communication, culture of peace and languages.

he is currently the coordinator of the norwegian millennium campaign, promoting the united nations' millennium development goals (mdg).

gert has also interned with fife community mediation, the undp nordic office in copenhagen, the centre for the study of terrorism and political violence (st andrews), unesco brazil, the norwegian embassy in buenos aires and the undp's democratic dialogue network in latin america. he has been a delegate to the united nations general assembly and an active member of the culture of peace youth advocacy team with united network of young (unoy) peacebuilders at the united nations.

for six years, gert was actively involved in the youth ngo world voices norway, both as director, deputy director, web editor and project coordinator. he is currently a board member of the norwegian peace alliance, united world colleges norway and the oslo and akershus chapter of the national association for gay and lesbian liberation (llh).

gert is bilingual in english and norwegian, manages spanish at near-native like level, and communicates well in portuguese and french. he can manage in italian, knows some basic german, and is currently learning arabic.

on his spare time, gert enjoys films, friends, dancing, travels, cooking, reading and organisational work. he has a special passion for salsa and merengue, and loves living as passionately, compassionately and nonviolently as possible.
